The state of the economy can force some to move back home. Many times a career move can be the reason as well. You never know when a long distance move may be in your future.
Here are some long distance moving tips:
1. Hunt for a reputable mover who will pay attention to detail and plan your move from the beginning to end. Work with a company that is efficient and experienced with a trained staff. There's nothing worse than having unskilled movers damage your possessions.
2. Select your mover and obtain a free in-home estimate that will map out a move plan and provide you with a fair price.
3. Begin to prepare your home for the move. Gather everything you have packed and disassembled, labeled and have them facing the door. This will assist your moving crew in the loading the carrier quickly.
4. Ask for free wardrobe boxes. Sometimes movers give these away for free. It doesn't hurt to ask!
5. Orchestrate a garage sale at your home. Try your best to get rid of items you don't need. Think "pack less".
6. Obtain information that's available at the Post Office concerning change of address. Fill out the appropriate form as soon as possible.
7. Call your utility companies about cancelling your service. Don't wait to the last minute to do this. Give them ample time. Usually the utility company expects at least a 3 week notice.
8. Gather important documents such as insurance policies, birth certificates, school records etc. Store in a good place. Ensure they are not lost in the move. Keep them separate from everything else. If you own a pet, ensure you gather its medical records as well. If you are unable to locate them all, your vet should be able to give you copies of your pet's immunization records. You may need to get new tags and licenses once you are settled in your new home.
9. Transfer any contents of your safety deposit box to your new bank near your new home. Ensure you have a record of all its contents as well, such as any valuables and important papers like marriages licenses and birth certificates.
10. Notify your bank of your move. Look for a new bank near your new home. Have your funds transferred to your new bank. Do this all before you move.
11. Remember all the professionals who you deal with such as accountants, lawyers, insurance agents, stock brokers, and schools regarding your children's records as well.
12. Purchase packing materials for your move, if you plan on doing the packing yourself.
13. Disconnect each of your major appliances.
