Long Distance Moving - 13 Tips!

The state of the economy can force some to move back home. Many times a career move can be the reason as well. You never know when a long distance move may be in your future.

Here are some long distance moving tips:

1. Hunt for a reputable mover who will pay attention to detail and plan your move from the beginning to end. Work with a company that is efficient and experienced with a trained staff. There's nothing worse than having unskilled movers damage your possessions.

2. Select your mover and obtain a free in-home estimate that will map out a move plan and provide you with a fair price.

3. Begin to prepare your home for the move. Gather everything you have packed and disassembled, labeled and have them facing the door. This will assist your moving crew in the loading the carrier quickly.

4. Ask for free wardrobe boxes. Sometimes movers give these away for free. It doesn't hurt to ask!

5. Orchestrate a garage sale at your home. Try your best to get rid of items you don't need. Think "pack less".

6. Obtain information that's available at the Post Office concerning change of address. Fill out the appropriate form as soon as possible.

7. Call your utility companies about cancelling your service. Don't wait to the last minute to do this. Give them ample time. Usually the utility company expects at least a 3 week notice.

8. Gather important documents such as insurance policies, birth certificates, school records etc. Store in a good place. Ensure they are not lost in the move. Keep them separate from everything else. If you own a pet, ensure you gather its medical records as well. If you are unable to locate them all, your vet should be able to give you copies of your pet's immunization records. You may need to get new tags and licenses once you are settled in your new home.

9. Transfer any contents of your safety deposit box to your new bank near your new home. Ensure you have a record of all its contents as well, such as any valuables and important papers like marriages licenses and birth certificates.

10. Notify your bank of your move. Look for a new bank near your new home. Have your funds transferred to your new bank. Do this all before you move.

11. Remember all the professionals who you deal with such as accountants, lawyers, insurance agents, stock brokers, and schools regarding your children's records as well.

12. Purchase packing materials for your move, if you plan on doing the packing yourself.

13. Disconnect each of your major appliances.

Do you know a good mover in your area? Search online and get educated on the subject of long distance moving. Don't just hire anyone for the job. Look for movers who are experienced. Go with the best and have no regrets.

What Is Considered Long Distance in a Long Distance Relationship?

So many of us have gone on and on about having troubles with distance. We hear people say that they do not want to be apart from their loved ones because there is that notion that when you are going to be apart, it is eventually going to end up in a fall out. But when we use the term long distance, how far apart would that be?

I have had friends asking me how far is far apart. Before I answer them, I laugh silently because it is actually a subjective kind of thing. Someone's idea of being in a long distance relationship could mean being a few blocks away from his or her loved one, while there may be others who would say that being in opposites sides of the earth would be considered as long distance. I guess most of us are surely going to agree on the latter, but the former is already considered to be distant, too.

If you were to ask me, I would practically answer you with an "It depends on you" and that would sincerely be my best answer. I mean, seriously, as I told you, it's going to need a subjective answer. It's the same thing as asking a girl what her ideal man is like. The keyword is ideal, and almost every positive trait in a guy pops into our heads. However, not every girl yearns for a Mr. Perfect. Girls have that "perfect" guy in their heads, but that's going to be someone who would complement them (probably). Ideal is somewhat like an idea only, so that would definitely vary from one person to another.

What Is Considered Long Distance in a Long Distance Relationship?

In my point of view, we all have been in a long distance relationship, in one way or another. You may have had that camping trip that you had to go to back in the summer, and you had no way of seeing your significant other. You may have had to live off on phone calls at night because you really have that need to talk to your boyfriend or girlfriend at least once a day. Or, you may have gone abroad for a vacation and all you can do is go on Skype to talk with your other half. Maybe you even went to two different colleges and you only had the summers to be together. The list can go on and on, surely you've had those "long distance moments".

Long distance relationships aren't exactly bad for couples. A thing is only going to be bad if you go and try to bring out the worst in one another, whether on purpose or not. Distance can actually be overcome. It's just a matter of willpower.

The following are 10 tips that will help you succeed in a long-distance relationship:

1. Set relationship rules and expectations from the start

10 Tips to Make Long-Distance Relationships Work

Have a mutual understanding that you will not date others, that you will communicate daily, and that you'll see each other once every one, two, or three months in person.

2. Communicate daily

Make use of modern communications media. If you can't afford to call on the phone daily, use mobile text messaging, e-mail or instant messaging. Invest in a webcam and make use of video calling feature offered by most instant messaging software today.

3. Be clear about your feelings

Being ambiguous about yourself would only create a guessing game that you don't need in your long-distance relationship. Be articulate with your partner about your feelings, expectations, clashing issues, and aspirations. When communicating with your partner, be honest. Keep your partner in the loop of things happening around your life and get your partner to reciprocate.

4. Provide constant reassurance of your feelings

Don't be afraid to say "I love you" often. Build the confidence in your partner that you are committed in the relationship.

5. Send care packages

Send personalized gift packages, be it cards, stuffed animals, photos, or collectibles. Be creative as you can get in personalizing the gift. Your partner will appreciate the effort that you've put in.

6. Meet regularly

Plan regular meetings and avoid making postponements at your fancy. As you do not see each other daily in person, take the extra mile to make the meeting special.

7. Trust each other

Trust is key in a long-distance relationship. Having constant doubts about your partner's motives will actually be detrimental to the relationship.

8. Be patient

You may feel things move slowly in a long-distance relationship. It is one of those odds you have to learn to overcome. With patience, true love will come with the test of time.

9. Make special occasions extra special

On special occasions like Valentine's Day, anniversaries, or your partner's birthday, make these occasions extra special. Take this opportunity to talk to your loved one on the phone longer or spend more time chatting online. Post a private video of yourself with your special greeting on an online video service. Perhaps you could also make a surprise visit.

10. Keep yourself busy

You can't be brooding over your distant loved one every second. Get a life. Involve yourself in activities that you are passionate about. When you get together, share your passion with your partner and he/she will find you a more interesting person. Also, don't forget spending social time with your family and friends. Having a relationship doesn't mean you have to burn bridges.

Long-distance relationship need not be dreadful. It can be fun. As the saying goes, "distance makes the heart grow fonder". Be appreciative of the fact that you're special in someone's heart even though that someone is miles away. With the right ingredients of trust, patience, and most importantly, commitment, your long-distance relationship holds much promise.
